Verstehen is a german word developed in the 19th century in the face of growing positivism and the development of “scientific” ways of understanding the world.
Verstehen involves the insistence that the meanings human beings give to their activity matters for understanding history and human society.
Those who take this interpretive stance not only welcome human meaning-giving but also investigate how the ongoing attribution of meaning affects the actual “happening” of interpersonal interactions and the overall “happenings” of human history.
